Travel To Gateshead

For anyone who doesn't know, Gateshead is on the south bank of the River Tyne, just over the bridge from the heart of Newcastle. As such it is easy to reach by road, rail and air. To arrive in Gateshead by rail you will wish to travel to Newcastle Central Station, which is an hour's travel from York, one and a half to two hours from Edinburgh and three hours from London, on the east coast main line. Travel by road is mainly by the A1 (M) which connects to both the north and south. Air travel is to Newcastle International Airport. The local Metro rail link offers connections from both the Central Station and airport to Gateshead town centre, less than five minutes walk from the Registrar's Office.

Location of the Ceremony

The ceremony was held at the Registrar's Office within Gateshead Civic Centre. This is located within the town centre, on Regent Street, two minutes from the main travel interchange. Note that although the address is officially Regent Street the civic centre is a large building effectively surrounded by Regent Terrace, Arthur Street, Prince Consort Road and High Street West. Looking for Regent Street probably wouldn't get very far!! Instead from the travel interchange walk up the main road (away from the river and multistory carpark, past the church to the set of traffic lights, and the building is immediatly ahead).

The Registrars Office is located to the east side of the building, adjoining High Street West, and is well sign posted. It is best accessed via its own entrance rather than the main civic centre entrances. The general area is made obvious by the layby marked wedding cars only!

Location of the Reception

The reception was held in the suite of the Swallow Gateshead Hotel. This hotel is only a few minutes walk from the civic centre. Note that there is no direct vehicular access between the civic centre and hotel, despite the two both being on High Street West. Instead a route along Prince Consort Road and then left down Gladstone Terrace would be recommended. Pedestrian access straght along High Street West is possible however (walk away from town, across the lights and past the school. The hotel may then be found not much further along on the right). The reception will be held in the Ravensworth Suite. Hotel staff will be happy to help and direct you.
